Reid Announces Introduction of Major Energy Transmission Bill at National Clean Energy Project Forum

February 23, 2009

In his remarks to today’s National Clean Energy Project forum at the Newseum, Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced he will introduce this week a bill that will make it easier to carry renewable energy from often remote locations to urban centers in need of power. This bill charts a better path to a cleaner, greener and smarter national transmission policy, without sacrificing reliability or affordability. Overhauling how green energy is delivered will create good-paying jobs in areas of Nevada that most need them. Reid served as Honorary Chair of the event.

“My legislation will require the President to designate renewable energy zones with significant clean energy generating potential. Then, a massive planning effort will begin in all the interconnection areas of the country to maximize the use of that renewable potential by building new transmission capacity. If that process falters, then the federal government would be given clear authority to keep it going and get that new transmission built on schedule.
