February 13, 2009

Washington, D.C. – Nevada Senators Harry Reid and John Ensign today announced more than $5 million in grant funding has been awarded to McCarran International, North Las Vegas and Reno/Stead airports for safety and improvement projects by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

The funds are broken down as follows:
•    $2,074,974 to McCarran International Airport for terminal apron expansion
•    $3,000,000 to North Las Vegas Airport for powerline relocation
•    $68,073 to Reno/Stead Airport for runway safety improvements necessary to bring the runway into compliance with FAA design standards

“I thank the Department of Transportation for recognizing the need to invest in projects that ensure the highest level of safety at Nevada’s airports,” Reid said.  “These funds will go a long way toward keeping safe the people at the airports and those who live and work in the surrounding areas.”

“Our state relies heavily on tourism to keep our economy strong,” said Ensign.  “It is so important that our airports are maintained to ensure that they can safely handle large amounts of traffic.  These funds will help ensure that this can be done.”
