Reid ensures funding from economic recovery package brings major benefits to Silver State
March 26, 2009
Washington, D.C. – Energy efficiency projects that will save money for families and create jobs for workers received a major boost from Nevada Senator Harry Reid, who secured funding for the efforts through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program. Projects benefiting areas throughout the state will receive more than $32 million to put Nevadans to work inspecting buildings for energy inefficiency and performing retrofitting work to make them more efficient. There will also be projects developing and installing on-site renewable energy for government buildings, and making transportation improvements like synchronizing traffic signals and creating bike lanes, pathways and pedestrian walkways.
This funding is part of the recently passed economic recovery package that directs more than $1.5 billion to Nevada.
“Energy efficiency not only puts money back into the pockets of Nevada families, but these projects also bring much-needed jobs to all corners to our state,” Reid said. “Both our urban and rural areas will see the benefit of this work, which will move us toward a clean energy future with the potential to turn around and transform our economy.”
The purpose of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program, first enacted in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 and funded in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, is to assist communities in reducing fossil fuel emissions in an environmentally sustainable manner by cutting total energy use of those communities, thereby saving consumers and taxpayers money. It is also designed to improve energy efficiency in the transportation sector, the building sector, and other sectors.
